Canon's new Pixma multifunction range adds desirable new features to the category, making this a more 'multi' function unit than ever before.

Besides the expected print, copy, scan and fax facilities, which are all top class on this Canon multifunction device (MFD), one of the standout features is the inbuilt double sided printing, letting you print on both sides of an A4 sheet of paper automatically.

The feature works incredibly well, and besides saving paper, it's amazing to see it built-in as a standard feature. We hope to see other manufacturers offer this as well in future models, as opposed to not at all, or as $100+ add ons. Hey, if you can get it double sided printing built-in for free, that's pretty alluring, wouldn't you agree?

Another standout is the ability to print onto CDs and DVDs with a 'white printable surface'. These discs are now available in stores, and they save you the hassle of fiddling with sticky labels as you just print directly onto the disc. It also actually works with discs that you've stuck a white label onto as well, so if you buy this unit, you can still use any old CD/DVD labels you still have, as well as existing stocks of non-printable discs.

Like a number of other manufacturers, Canon have also upgraded their printing technology, delivering even better picture quality for photos by using 2 picolitre drops of ink. A picolitre is a trillionth of a litre, making for super tiny droplets to enhance picture resolution even further. Borderless printing is also standard, as it is on most of the other units in this guide. And of course… picture and print quality is amazing, as you'd expect with a brand new printer that has brand new print head technology!

Canon also have a new Pixma 760 model for $499. This unit is more aimed at digital photography and printing enthusiasts, with a built-in slide and negative scanner (as with the Epson Stylus Photo RX630) and a large 2.5" LCD screen. It still retains the inbuilt double sided printing and the CD/DVD printing capabilities as standard, features which truly make Canon's printers and MFDs stand out as strong competitors to all of the other printers and MFDs on the market.
