Unwired and Freshtel in VoIP deal PDF  | Print |
Thursday, 11 August 2005

Wireless broadband provider, Unwired Australia (ASX:UNW) and VoIP technology provider, Freshtel Holdings (ASX:FRE) have announced a partnership to provide access to an internet phone service that offers subscribers competitively priced local, interstate and international call rates.

The Freshtel-Unwired partnership, which comes into effect on 22 August, aims to capitalise on the growing demand for VoIP services in Australia.

Unwired CEO, David Spence said VoIP will have real appeal to customers seeking a cost effective and convenient alternative to the traditional fixed home phone-line.

“There is a trend towards replacing the traditional home phone with other forms of more cost effective telephony. Unwired’s most recent research found 31% of Unwired's surveyed customers chose to rely on mobile phones and Unwired wireless broadband, rather than fixed lines, for their voice and data communications requirements.

“VoIP is a great option for customers who don't want the expense of a fixed line into the home. Unwired has looked at a number of VoIP services to enhance the suite of services we offer our customers. Freshtel’s Firefly software offered the best combination of simplicity, pricing, call functionality including free voice-mail and call forwarding – and is highly compatible with the Unwired network,” Spence said.

Freshtel Holdings CEO, Michael Carew said, “Freshtel and Unwired’s partnership will provide consumers with their first real experience of wireless VoIP. By teaming with Australia’s fastest growing wireless broadband carrier, this partnership provides Freshtel with immediate access to the Australian retail market. Our focus remains on providing the best VoIP solutions globally to our partners and their customers.”

From 22 August, Unwired's website will point customers to the Freshtel site to download the free software. They can also redeem a $10 call credit as part of the deal. Packaging on Unwired boxes in select retail stores will contain flyers and box
stickers outlining the deal. As with traditional telephony providers, customers can choose to pay as they go or through monthly subscriber plans.
